Phase 2 Winners:

  • Consequent Labs – A novel solution to enable rapid, user-friendly, and highly-scalable respirator fit testing of professional users and the general public for both routine use and during public health emergencies.
  • Tony Jiang – HIR utilizes humidity and a passive chemical indicator to determine respirator fit in real time.
  • Mobomo – Fit & Breathe: Complete particulate filtering facepiece respirator management.
  • MyMaskMovement – This innovation makes fit testing inclusive and accessible using a mobile app.
  • Philip Neustrom – The FitTests4All Home Fit Testing Kit is an affordable respirator evaluation solution designed for both home and on-the-go use.
  • OpenAeros LLC – OpenFT: A low-cost, open source, quantitative fit tester that pairs a unique non-destructive sampling probe with an open source condensation particle counter to deliver real time respirator fit measurement.
  • Sungmee Park and Sundaresan Jayaraman – A fabric-based sensor network integrated into an N95 filtering facepiece respirator (FFR) monitors the fit of the respirator on the user continuously and unobtrusively, and provides alerts to the user when there is faceseal leakage that could compromise the fit causing the respirator to no longer afford the degree of protection for which it has been designed.
  • TruFIT LLC. – TruFIT’s solution pioneers the development of fail-safe, visual and real-time fit indicators for facial personal protective equipment (PPE) such as masks and respirators
  • Richárd Ádám Vécsey and Axel Ország-Krisz, Team rixel – This solution is an AI assisted mobile application and its infrastructure to give immediate feedback for the user about the fit of the selected FFR.

Phase 1 Winners:

  • Kenneth Ambler, Blackbird Labs – FitLight adds a small, visible, LED to a FFR that briefly lights when a breath is taken while the mask has an effective seal. Checking a good fit is as easy as looking for a flash every few seconds.
  • Irtaza Barlas, Team R4zi – An indirect measurement of respirator fitness by monitoring in real-time the mask temperature profile as the subject breaths in and out.
  • Consequent Labs – A novel solution to enable rapid, user-friendly, and highly-scalable respirator fit testing of professional users and the general public for both routine use and during public health emergencies.
  • Engineering Dynamics – The CLEARFIT concept leverages AI, facial recognition, and widely available technology to provide immediate and cost-effective evaluation of respirator fit for a diverse range of users.
  • Tony Jiang – TIR is a solution that harnesses the mechanics of temperature sensors to determine respirator fit in real-time.
  • Igor Jovanovic – This solution will be using light tracing for fit test and feedback.
  • Arnold R. Milton – A qualitative method utilizing light rays to give immediate evaluation and feedback to end users about the FFR fit.
  • Alejandro Miranda – The solution proposed is to use an infrared/thermal camera to detect differences in temperature due to leakage at the face-respirator interface, indicating a deficient fit.
  • Mobomo – Utilizing their expertise in Human-Centered Design and passion for designing elegant solutions to complex challenges, Mobomo’s Phase I Concept Paper detailed the development of a rapid prototype that combines lidar technology with an augmented facial geometry mesh model to accurately map individual users’ unique features and pinpoint potential leakage points in conventional respirator fit evaluation tests.
  • MyMaskMovement – This innovation is a virtual fit test based on a personalized mask fitting technology developed during the pandemic.
  • NSI – Solution is a pulmonologically-grounded FFR fit evaluation system.
  • Philip Neustrom – The FitTests4All Home Fit Testing Kit is a respirator fit testing solution designed to be as affordable as possible, which allows users to perform high-quality qualitative respirator fit tests at home.
  • OpenAeros LLC – This is a low-cost quantitative fit tester that pairs a unique sampling probe with their open source condensation particle counter to deliver real time respirator fit measurement with no damage to the respirator.
  • SafeSource Direct – Ripple Fit is a small, simple, and easily manufacturable product with continuous fit feedback which can be incorporated into new and existing respirator designs.
  • Salish Research Group – Using ML-powered 3D face modeling, we identify an optimal mask fit and interactively guide users through a scientifically validated fit test process.
  • Sungmee Park and Sundaresan Jayaraman – This innovation device is customized to the individual’s facial profile, continuously monitors the fit unobtrusively, and when there is a change in the fit during use, which could lead to a faceseal leakage, alerts the user through an App on the smartphone thereby ensuring the user’s safety.
  • Amandeep Premi, Selfie Frills – The proposed innovation aims to employ personalized 3D facial scanning with infrared thermography for accurate and efficient respirator fitting using deep learning methodologies.
  • Lex Schultheis (the Robert E. Fischell Institute for Biomedical Devices at the University of Maryland) – This submission will test face-to-fit of disposable respirators by optical gas imaging, detect gas leakage during physical activity by colorimetric methods and evaluate possible benefits of a biocompatible adhesive barrier strip on anatomy prone to leakage.
  • TruFIT LLC. – This solution pioneers the development of fail-safe, visual and real-time fit indicators for facial personal protective equipment (PPE) such as masks and respirators.
